I was a woman alone exploring AK in March of 08, After hours of driving I came upon the " Byers Creek Lodge". I did not have a reservation, but there were rooms available. I was given a "last minute rate", and The owners were absolutely wonderful people, who made my stay so great that I stayed an extra day ( I should of stayed longer, and was sorry I left). This is a rustic motel/Inn with a gift shop, and cafe where the home cooked meals are fantastic! No room service, or WiFi, the rooms are basic and have cable T.V. Keep in mind your in Alaska, this is not the "Ritz", but it is rustic and warm, if you want glamor go to N.Y. The owners did all they could to make my stay memorable, warm, and wonderful! I consider the lodge a hidden gem, and for those fortunate enough to stay here they will go back, it is the only place I would stay in the Denali/ Talkeetna area, it is worth the drive. The bathroom is not in the cottages, just a short walk away, this is not a problem at all. There is wildlife everywhere, and the Mt. McKinley look-out is very near. The lodge is the perfect place for Northern Lights viewing, you don't have to stay at the "pricey places for good Aurora viewing". At Byers creek you can stay in the warm comfort of your own room sitting on your bed, and watch the northern lights gently wave across the heavens. You can also Step right out on the deck and be a part of this phenomenal experience, you can hear the wolves howl as they respond to the dancing and swirling green red, and blue lights as they wave across the nights sky, which makes for a truly awe inspiring, and unforgettable experience. You can understand all the physics of the Aurora, but to actually view the Aurora, puts all science aside and what you are witnessing is enchantingly magical. Byers Creek Lodge is a genuine hidden treasure, and as a woman traveling alone, I felt safe, and secure and was made to feel like I was family, and not just a guest. I am planning a return trip and hope to bring friends along for the experience. Once in Fairbanks I stayed in an expensive and well known place for Aurora viewing, I payed twice the price, and the viewing or experience was not near as good as at the Byers Creek Lodge
